Introducing the Floor-Rig 9000: An Expanding Machine Fleet for Advanced Testing
In the world of high-performance testing and computing, how you assemble and manage your hardware can be just as important as the equipment itself. Recently, I shared an update on my evolving setup, affectionately dubbed the “Floor-Rig 9000,” which has become a central hub for testing a diverse array of machines and components.
Initially, the rig garnered mixed reactions—some viewers were impressed by its scale and capabilities, while others were somewhat horrified at its seemingly chaotic layout. The truth is, this operational beast serves a vital purpose: to facilitate rigorous testing of various hardware configurations, including high-end graphics cards and multi-gigabyte systems.
A Major Upgrade on the Horizon
Excitingly, this floor rig is about to receive a significant upgrade. It will be relocated to a dedicated, purpose-built space featuring advanced cooling systems, organized wiring, and improved cable management solutions. This move aims to enhance safety, efficiency, and ease of maintenance, ensuring the setup continues to support demanding testing scenarios.
A Closer Look at the System Architecture
At its core, the rig is a complex yet highly optimized machine setup. Multiple power sources and load management systems operate seamlessly to support simultaneous high-power tests. Notably, the rig includes two high-capacity graphics cards: a 24GB Titan and a 48GB Titan, among other powerful components.
Electrical Infrastructure and Power Management
For those interested in the technical details, the setup is powered via a 32A inlet drawing from a UK three-phase 400V supply. The phases are distributed into multiple 230V circuits, each with 13A outlets capable of delivering approximately 2,990W. This configuration allows for the continuous operation of up to ten Sparks (a type of high-current load device) per socket, across different rings, totaling a maximum of around 30 Sparks simultaneously.
While the arrangement may appear chaotic at first glance, it’s a carefully engineered system. Features include thermal management, per-Spark load control, automatic shutdown protocols, remote monitoring capabilities, and detailed power telemetry. Most power draw is sourced from solar energy, with continuous monitoring ensuring safe and efficient operation.
Moving Forward
The current floor rig setup is transitioning into an underground location designed specifically for larger, more sophisticated setups. This new environment offers optimized power and climate control, maintaining an ideal constant temperature of 11°C—perfect for hardware longevity and consistent testing conditions.
A Heartfelt Thanks
I appreciate everyone who has taken the time to view and engage with my setup. Your encouragement and interest motivate me to continue pushing the boundaries of hardware testing and system optimization.
In Summary:
The “Floor-Rig 9000” is more than just a chaotic collection of machines—it’s a meticulously designed, high-capacity testing platform evolving into a dedicated, climate-controlled environment. Its expansion reflects a passion for hardware experimentation, coupled with a commitment to safety, efficiency, and community sharing.
Thank you for being part of this journey. Stay tuned for more updates as the new setup comes online!
